Original Beauty Blender | Worth the hype?

My absolute favourite way to apply foundation, concealer and even powder is with a sponge, so it's a pretty important makeup tool for me. I find that they work so much better than brushes on my skin and create a more even finish. I've gone so long now with only ever using the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion sponge as I didn't feel the need to try anything else, however, I was kindly sent the Original Beauty Blender* in pink and I was really looking forward to seeing if it lived up to the hype or not.

On my very first use I noticed (in comparison to the Miracle Complexion sponge) that the Beauty Blender was slightly smaller, lighter in weight and also shaped slightly better, with its rounded bottom and more precise tip. I also noticed in the first couple of weeks whilst washing this, the water ran pink which I'm assuming was dye. I'm not sure whether this is anything to worry about or not, or even if the pink transferred onto my face (I didn't notice anything) but it eventually stopped after a few weeks anyway.

I've been using the round end predominantly for foundation and the pointed end for concealer and powder. It blends liquid products really well and picks up powder generously, and as I mentioned, the shape is more adapted to the contours of your face so you can really get into every corner. It can be a struggle getting right under the eyes with the Miracle Complexion sponge as it's more rounded, so this has been really easy to work with.
Something I've realised is that it doesn't seem to soak up as much water, which is probably a good thing as it means your foundation won't be soaked up either, but I find myself having to wet or spray it much more than I'm used to. This also means it doesn't expand much, it only really gets a touch bigger when washing.

In terms of finish, it's been pretty much the same. I can still achieve an even, flawless base with this which has been great. The wear time has been pretty similar too - cracks are now starting to form on the Beauty Blender after a month or so of use and foundation is starting to stain the pink colour. I had heard that this lasts months and months so I wasn't expecting to see any signs of wear so soon. I usually replace my Miracle Complexion sponge every 2-3 months, as I wash mine everyday, but I was kind of expecting more around the 4+ month mark with this. It's not in a bad way yet don't get me wrong, I was just surprised to see a crack appearing after 5 weeks.

I do think the Beauty Blender is really good. It's shape is the main selling point for me, it's perfect for the under eyes and nose area. I'm just not sure if it really performs any better, or if it's worth an extra £10 in comparison to the Real Technique's version. So for me, I can see the hype but I will probably go back to the Miracle Complexion Sponge once this has had its use.

What are your thoughts on the Beauty Blender? Worth the hype?
